![]() ![]() This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. I did not voice my concerns to Forest Farm as they have been 100 unreceptive to. However this is tall, spindly and kind of odd looking. I thought Spiraea was a dwarf, low growing and compact plant. I bought this plant from Forest Farm this spring. They do best in full sun, but many will grow in light shade. My 'Magic Carpet' Spiraea is broken katefisher. Using a pencil or a stick, poke a hole in the soil that is deep enough to fit the leafless portion of the cutting. Fill a 4-inch pot with potting mix and water until evenly moist but not soggy. Remove leaves from the lower third and dip the stem in rooting hormone. It prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. Spirea are compact, mounded shrubs that require well-drained soil and are intolerant of wet sites. In late spring, using a sharp knife or pruners, cut a branch tip 4 inches in length. This shrub should only be grown in full sunlight. ![]() It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years. You can use pruning shears and cut one at a time or hedge clippers and simply cut them all off at once. In early spring, before the leaf buds start to swell, cut all of the stems down so they’re 4 to 6 in. It tends to fill out right to the ground and therefore doesn't necessarily require facer plants in front. Spirea that’s not pruned or pruned to the ground each spring has a casual, loose habit. Magic Carpet Spirea will grow to be about 24 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 3 feet. Magic Carpet Spirea is recommended for the following landscape applications It has no significant negative characteristics. It is a good choice for attracting butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. This shrub will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. ![]() Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage. Magic Carpet Spirea is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a more or less rounded form. The small serrated pointy leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding scarlet in the fall. It has attractive yellow deciduous foliage which emerges tomato-orange in spring. Magic Carpet Spirea features showy clusters of hot pink flowers at the ends of the branches from late spring to early summer. A first rate garden detail shrub for color effect, with foliage emerging bright red fading to yellow in summer, turning deep red in fall, and showy flat-topped clusters of pink flowers in early summer forms a dense, compact ball, neat and tidy ![]()
